The Laboratory Manager - Inorganics has the following duties:
· Overseeing staff within the section.
· Maximum efficiency and productivity in the section. Fostering a work ethic within the section that increases productivity by:
· Ensuring resources are utilized effectively and efficiently
· Minimizing wastage (e.g. solvent)
· Reducing breakages (e.g. glassware)
· Optimizing the work hours within the laboratory
· Addressing staff moral and performance issues, informing the business manager/laboratory manager/senior chemist, where necessary.
· Maintaining an acceptable turnaround of tasks or results within the section, including meeting holding times. Additionally, will contribute to efficiencies in this area on continual basis.
· Ensuring all duties within the section are conducted in accordance with the Quality Procedures Manual. Keeping up to date with changes in methodology within the section. Will work with QA to update SOP’s and manuals as necessary.
Work with other supervisors, managers and Laboratory Directors to achieve client satisfaction on timely delivery of results, improve and maintain relationships to other sections
· Training and developing of Team Lead(s).
· Assist in monitoring instrument performance and identify deviations from specification and notifying Manager or Laboratory Director if the instrument is not operating to specifications, including when instrument QC fall outside control limits.
· Have a working knowledge and understanding of the ALS quality management system.
· Be aware of requirements for laboratory competence.

· Proficient verbal and written communication skills.

· Proficient computer skills, specifically Microsoft Office.
· Must be able to initiate corrective action without prompting and assist co-workers whenever necessary in order to meet deadlines.
· Must be able to effectively perform duties under pressures arising from large sample volumes and short turn-around times.
· Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision.
· Ability to use (or learn to use) Laboratory Information Management System.
Adheres to safety policies and practices
· Follow all company operating procedures, standards, policies, and training to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the site.
· Play an active role in the ALS safety program by correcting or reporting unsafe acts and conditions that are observed during the day-to-day operations to create a zero-injury work environment.
· Participate in and support HSE initiatives, as required by ALS leadership.
· Understand and use HSE precautions (such as but not limited to fume hoods and PPE) while working with chemicals and samples of unknown hazards.
· Ensure the health and safety of staff, contractors, and/or visitors by providing appropriate leadership, due diligence, resources, training, and enforcement for all individuals onsite.
· Monitor and enforce the health, safety and environment policies, procedures and ensure compliance with the relevant regulations.
· Actively promote awareness of these policies, procedures, and regulations amongst company personnel.
· Actively support and participate in all OHS initiatives. Lead by example.
· Report all personal injuries and incidents and assist with investigations as per company policy.
Ensure the company sites adhere to all environmental requirements as determined by government legislation, regulation, and company policy.

· Ensure Quality Systems are adhered to in performance, review, and reporting of laboratory duties and communicate all quality issues.

· Ensure all statutory management and reporting requirements are met.
· Ensure compliance and continuous improvement of the Quality Management System.

· Ensures that the quality of the analytical data produced is maintained at a level that meets or exceeds company and market acceptable standards;
· Ensures laboratory equipment is of the standard required to meet or exceed Data Quality Objectives (DQOs);
· Ensures laboratory staff is trained in all aspects of the Quality System and adhere to the appropriate SOPs and principles of the system;
· Assesses the results of QA/QC audits and implement improvements as required;
Ensures root cause investigations are properly conducted for corrective actions and solutions are effective and closed out in an appropriate timeframe (within the month).
· Able to speak and hear clearly while communicating with co-workers, Department team members, management, and clients.
· Able to lift to 50 lbs. on a consistent basis (may request and use a dolly for situations requiring heavy loads).
· Able to sit, drive, and walk for 100% of an 8-hour day.
· Must be able to drive and get in and out of vehicle.
· Dexterity in hands and fingers to operate vehicle, computer and other equipment.
Must have average vision and able to see to read reports and operate vehicle, office equipment.
